Thinking about joining us for the first time? We know that visiting a new church can be overwhelming at times. Hopefully the answers to the questions below will help you have a great first experience. Here is a snapshot of what to expect on a typical Sunday morning on the campus of First United Methodist Church in Shreveport.
When are your worship services?
First UMC Shreveport offers a variety of worship services on Sunday mornings. A traditional worship service is held at both 8:30am and 11:00am in the Sanctuary and a contemporary worship service is held at 9:30am and 11:00am in the Emmett Hook Center. A Wesleyan Communion service is held on the first Sunday of each month in the Couch Chapel at 9:45am.
A deaf interpreter is available in the 11:00am traditional worship service. The interpreter sits on the front left side of the sanctuary.
Where are you located?
First UMC is located in downtown Shreveport at 500 Common Street, 71101. Our Sanctuary is the largest building on our campus, standing at the head of Texas Street. The Emmett Hook Center is located on the corner of Milam & Common Streets. Click here for a campus map.
Where do I park?
Parking is available on all sides of our campus. You are welcome to park in any of the parking lots surrounding our campus, free of charge. For your convenience, friendly golf cart drivers are available to help you get from your car to the worship experience of your choosing. The Early Childhood Ministry building also has a covered drive to lessen your walk with a young child in tow.
What should I wear?
First United Methodist Church is diverse in both age and style. Right from the start we want you to know we are about who you are on the inside, not what you look like on the outside. We encourage you to dress in a way that you are comfortable. Attire in our worship services ranges from business wear to jeans and/or shorts. Typical dress in our traditional services is business to business casual. The culture in our contemporary service is more laid back – attire for members and visitors ranges from business casual to teenage relaxed.
Is there a Welcome & Information Center?
Yes. While you are here, please join us in Coffee Corner, located on the first floor of the Education & Administration building. Enjoy a healthy snack and a cup of coffee or hot tea. Friendly greeters are available to visit with you, help you find your way around our campus and answer any questions you may have about the life of our church. Coffee Corner is open and staffed each Sunday, 9:30am-‐11:00am.
What about my children?
A fully staffed nursery is available during all Sunday worship services in the Early Childhood Ministry building (located behind the Emmett Hook Center on the corner of Milam & Douglas Streets). Children ages 8 weeks to 2 years are cared for by our loving staff and volunteers allowing you the opportunity to worship, and give God your full attention. Children ages 2-‐Grade 4 are encouraged to attend an age appropriate worship experience during regular worship times. Click here to find out more about Children’s Worship at FUMC.
