In 2008, Rev. Hu Debo (Minister of Global Missions at FUMC Shreveport) led our congregation in the first steps of identifying places of need where we could begin to give, go, and partner in Haiti. Since then, we have worked closely with The Global Orphan Project and the Methodist Church of Haiti to make relationships with orphan villages, churches, and communities.
FUMC is spearheading efforts to provide village sponsorships for two orphan villages (Bighouse and Darivaje) by sending multiple teams down every year to execute construction projects, supply drops, VBS weeks, and mobile medical clinics.
We are grateful to be invited into a bigger picture as we continue to raise funds and awareness for the country that has captured our hearts.
Rev. Debo, Britney Winn (FUMC’s Director of Serving Ministries), and a couple of the other First Methodist staff members prepare and lead between 7 and 8 teams per year to Haiti, continuing to add to the conversation and grow our relationship between our family here and there. Upon one visit to Bighouse Orphanage, we thanked Pastor Jean Elysee for allowing our teams to visit, to which he laughed and said in Creole, “Why do you thank someone for allowing you into your own home? Bighouse is your house. The children are your family.”
We are blessed to be a part of an adventure where beauty and brokenness, suffering and joy are showing us the face of God.
