Sharing the Love of Jesus Christ
![]() Celebrations TeamOur Church celebrates its life and worship through a very wide ranging and multi-faceted program of
organizations, experiences, and responsibilities. The faith is celebrated in worship and the arts primarily through the Sunday services and special events. All of these experiences are made possible through the efforts of a talented staff and hundreds of lay volunteers who serve in music groups, the Altar Guild, acolytes, the Wedding and Funeral Committees, ushers, greeters , Communion Stewards, prepare Advent or Lenten devotional materials, decorate and care for the Sanctuary. There is a place of ministry for everyone. Volunteers are welcome at any time by calling the Music Office 318.429.6887.___________________________________________________________________
Altar Guild
![]() Members of the Altar Guild include men and women who assist in preparing the altar area, taking flowers on Mondays to hospitalized members, decorating the Sanctuary for Christmas and other holidays, and taking the poinsettias and lilies to members in nursing homes and hospitals after these special holidays. Members usually serve for two years and select their preferred area of service. Duties do not require a lot of time, yet provide vital services to the church and its members. A "Welcome to the Altar Guild" tea is held yearly, usually in the Fall for volunteers to meet, select their area of service and obtain information relating to their job.

Funeral Committee
Funeral committee members are present at all funerals held at the church. Their job is to assist the minister and family in anyway needed. They change the altar paraments, light altar candles prior to the service, plan the orders of worship, answer questions and assist those attending the service. They are present to greet and assist family members, direct them to the waiting area and then to the sanctuary at the appropriate time. Volunteers usually serve for one year but can be permanent members or substitutes. They work on a rotational "as needed" basis, in pairs or teams.

Wedding Committee
Wedding Committee members are present at all rehearsals and weddings to assist the minister and wedding party during both functions. They mail wedding packets with information and necessary forms to the bride. They change the altar paraments, light altar candles prior to the service and answer any questions. They move the altar table and podium prior to the ceremony if needed. Wedding knellers are put in place. They help coordinate wedding procedures, assist the bride, the groom, and their attendants and answer any questions. They help position attendants at the altar during the rehearsal and stand by to assist with the processional. Members work in pairs, or teams, and usually work all weddings scheduled for a given month. New members are always placed with an experienced team.

Ushers
Ushers are present at each Sunday service and on other special occasions. They prepare the sanctuary for worship service by keeping candles at the altar rail, placing attendance books in the pews, pass out programs of worship, assist members and visitors with seating and questions, take up the offering and present it at the altar during services. Each service required 12 to 16 ushers. Permanent, part time, and/or substitutes (male & female) are always welcome.

Greeters
Greeters are present at each Sunday morning service (8:30 & 11:00) in the Sanctuary, the foyer, and elevator areas. Duties are to extend a warm welcome to visitors, assist them in locating areas of the church such as the nursery or Sunday School classrooms, and to answer any quesitons they may have. After the service, they extend a cordial invitation to return. A greeter is one who enjoys meeting people with a smile and a welcome. They usually work in pairs (husband/wife teams are encouraged, but not required). They are asked to work approximately one Sunday every two or three months.
For information on how to volunteer for one of these positions, please contact the Music Department at 318.429.6887 or email us at kgray@fumcshreveport.org.
