The Samaritan Counseling Center of Shreveport/Bossier is a professional, accredited center for counseling, education and consultation.  The Samaritan Center is Faith-based and focuses on the healing love of God.  It is the Samaritan Center’s mission to provide quality counseling for all economic groups in our community.  Free workshops and seminars are provided on topics relating to stress management, spiritual growth, pre-marital counseling, marriage enrichment, parenting skills, and communication skills for couples.  Fee subsidies for clients who cannot afford help are made available through donations from congregations, corporations and individuals.  Counseling services offered at the Samaritan Center are confidential, and counselors do not impose their religious beliefs on others.

The Martin Luther King Health Center is a non-profit health center that provides free medical care and free medications to uninsured and under-insured individuals residing in the Shreveport area (primarily in the Ledbetter Heights and Allendale neighborhoods).  The MLKHC began in 1985 with Dr. Robert H. Jackson seeing patients in the local soup kitchen and has expanded into a freestanding clinic.  The health center is staffed by volunteer doctors, pharmacists, nurses and community supporters.  The MLKHC provides medical care to approximately 300 active patients in a year that are seen four times per year.  The services provided to patients include physician contact, health and nutrition education, client enrollment in Patient Assistance Programs, referrals and the supply of medicines. The focus of the Health Center is to provide treatment for patients with chronic diseases that cannot afford the treatments.  First United Methodist Church supports the Martin Luther Health Center through grant funding and donated services.

Centerpoint, established in 1991, serves as the center of the social services network in the Shreveport-Bossier area.  Its mission is to coordinate the services and efforts towards successful coalition building to meet the needs of the homeless, the poor and others in need of services.  Centerpoint provides assistance to more than 3,500 persons each year.  Coordination of services is accomplished through the provision of information and referral services, and through acting as the center for case management for the homeless.  Centerpoint’s official goal is:  “To serve as a center for managed access to services, the dissemination of information, the compilation of data, and the facilitation of networking for the social service in the Shreveport-Bossier area.”  First United Methodist Church has assisted in funding that was used to provide the underserved of our community with basic needs such as Identification cards and Birth Certificates. Funds were also used to fill over 200 medical prescriptions and assist over 100 individuals with partial utility assistance.

It is the philosophy of the Christian Service program that each person, regardless of race, religion, or gender is deserving of respect and has a right to life of dignity. In the services that they provide and the work that is performed by the staff of the Christian Service Program they reach out to persons who lack the basic necessities of life and strive to assist with those needs in such a manner that respects the dignity of each person served, as well as help them to achieve independence and self-sufficiency. In conclusion; the mission of Christian Service is not simply to give a free handout, but rather to help people lift themselves up and discover they have dignity, ability and self worth.
